In Café Deseado, one hears the music of a nonexistent café from the Patagonian city of Puerto Deseado. Mainly original recipes are served there - concoctions of the most varied ingredients and styles. Long before this type of music had received the epithets of imaginary folklore or world music, a similar mélange from the mouth of Río de la Plata had become the main additive in fermenting tango. Today it recounts wordless tales of pampas that stretch southward from Lake Bodam. Café Deseado is printer Martin Amstutz on the bandoneon, Stefan Gschwend on the guitar and guest violinist, Ben Lovett.

Presenting a unique multimedia project by Czech painter and illustrator Milada Marešová from the early 1920s which was in many respects ahead of its time.

 

13:00–14:00 Martin Amstutz

Wochenblatt, Martin Amstutz’s weekly newspaper, was issued this week for 1128th time. Though not every issue has come out in print, there has always been at least one specimen. Editor in chief Amstutz archives each installment in a heap next to his workshop desk. At the exhibition in Tábor, you can see every issue he has ever printed - and typeset and illustrated and, in most cases, written. As its name suggests, Wochenblatt consists of a single page which is printed - aside from two exceptions (“I’ve introduced an innovation - the other side of the page,” the author notes) - on one side. Despite its small circulation, the weekly publication has proved influential in the Swiss town of St. Gallen over which Amstutz’s keen eye keeps watch. Make sure to mark your calendars for Thursday evening because Café Deseado with Martin Amstutz on the bandoneon, Stefan Gschwend on the guitar and Ben Lovett on the violin are playing in BaoDílna!

 

To learn a new language is to become a new man. Or elf, or alien, or one of Gulliver’s Lilliputians. In his remarkable book, Yens Wahlgren, an expert on artificial languages spoken in fictional worlds, deals with such linguistic phenomena as Star Trek and Game of Thrones, The Adventures of Tarzan or the Tintin comic books. In more than a hundred language portraits, he takes us on a captivating journey through history from the mysterious 12th century manuscripts of St. Hildegard to the newspeak of Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984 and the Nadsat of Burgess’s Clockwork Orange.

16:30–18:00 Alternative comics: Stripburger / Kitokija Grafika / Articho 

In twenty-minute segments, we introduce publishers who have brought a selection of their books to Tabook. At long last we can present our first guest from the Balkans, a famous Slovenian comic book publisher accompanied by David Krančan, one of their Croatian writers. Kitokija Grafika offers the most interesting in Lithuanian publishing and Peps is a small publishing house from France which originated in a bookshop!

 

17:30–19:00 Peter Gelderloos: That would never work

A discussion with Peter Gelderloos on whether anarchy is a utopian ideal. The first Czech edition of his book, Anarchy Works, will be available for sale at Tabook. In it he offers dozens of examples, past and present, from around the world where he shows that anarchy - that is, a social order where interpersonal relationships are not determined by hierarchy and force, but by principals of solidarity and mutual assistance - is not only functional but, most importantly, natural. Anarchy is the system humans developed in and would undoubtedly still be living happily in today had they not been stripped of it by fraud or force.

 

17:30–18:30 Unexpected meeting: Tom Buron

French poet Tom Buron (1992) publishes his poems (Le Blues du 21e Siècle & Autres Poèmes, 2016, Nostaljukebox, 2017, a Nadirs 2019) in Editions Maelström, a small publishing house in Brussels. His poetry was received enthusiastically by French cult magazine Les Lettres Françaises, and beatnik poet Jack Hirschman writes in his introduction to Nostaljukebox that, “Buron represents the contemporaneity of tomorrow in terms of what we all will be being gripped by in the days of poetry to come...” In Tábor he will read prose poetry from his Nadirs collection which combines mysticism, a penchant for urbanism, lyricism and argot with sounds and rhythms reminiscent of jazz.

20:00–21:00 Kabaret Kajbar

In the beginning there was DAAD - without him there was “nothing-anything-everything.” Such is the motto of Kabaret Kajbar - a local creative institution from České Budějovice. Through dance, music and verse they assert that re-creatio mundi is indeed what rules the world. The mental journey around the world through head-net and heart-screen affirms that after the beginning there was the word, the sword, the yoked herd. And art is like creation, just as relevant in the first as in the last of days. And whosoever doth die before his death, dieth not when he doth die. In the beginning there was DAAD and “quodlibet–nihil-omnium.”

 

9:30–11:00 Martin Salisbury: The Illustrated Dust Jacket: 1920–1970 

Drawing on his recent book for Thames & Hudson publishers, Martin Salisbury tracks the evolution of the detachable dust jacket from purely functional plain protector of leather bindings in the 19th century to the lavishly designed ‘jacket’ that provided work for leading artists through the middle of the last century.

The term ‘illustration’ has become inadequate for the rapidly evolving artform of picturebook-making, which is increasingly becoming the domain of the single ‘maker’, whose authorial art involves the synthesis of word and image in interdependent harmony. Martin Salisbury reviews some influential examples.

Dreaming of America at world’s end. Tábor’s own amateur women’s choir (Štare kachně, Spiženy, Žas?) sings American folksongs, some traditional, some untraditional, in arrangements by Ben Lovett. 

Our American dream might include an Irish ballad and a song from Iceland, but all have come to us from across the sea, from the shore to the west. From the shore beyond. For all are joined by a single thread: encountering death in her many forms and seeking for what lies beyond. Fear of judgment day, solitude, losing one’s way? Where to now, down to the river? And after that?

Světlomat. Shape-shifting and pulsing with energy, Mona Šiška, one of the most talented actresses of a generation, sings her dreams, anxieties and rage in rough-hewn voice... The band practices amid deep forests, and the violin, guitar, bass and drums bring us back to a time when we would go to concerts to really dance our feet off...

Nina is a violinist who started a band in Prague which she named after her biggest fan - her grandma. Her music talks about the journeys that are intertwined in human fate, the song are in several different languages and you can feel in them aspects of jazz, reggae, indie and other genres. The concert has been supported by the Endowment for the arts.
